Jackson Hole Therapeutic Riding (JHTR) was established as a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization in 1993 by three women who knew the value of horses as therapy. They were Robin Lightner, Dede McDonald and Elaine Infanger. A horse woman, a physical therapist, and a mother, these extraordinary women introduced a novel and innovative form of therapy to the Jackson community. With just a handful of horses, JHTR moved from arena to arena in order to provide this essential service to children and adults throughout the county living with disabilities. In 1997, after a successful capital campaign, a new arena was built. Since that time, JHTR has become one of the most well-known and respected non-profits in Teton County, Wyoming.

For 30 years, JHTR has harnessed the unique bond between a horse and its rider to empower our students with confidence, strength, and independence. The organization’s mission is to empower, inspire, and enrich lives through Equine-Assisted Activities and Therapies. To achieve this mission, JHTR has developed five programs:

Each of our services is driven by the same mission, and is specially designed to meet the individualized needs of our participants. As the first Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship, International (PATH, Int’l) Premier Accredited Center in the state of Wyoming, we are committed to upholding the highest level of quality and care, while exceeding industry standards. PATH, Int’l is a membership organization whose goal is to promote safe, professional, ethical and therapeutic activities for people with and without disabilities, through education, communication, standards and research.

Our PATH, Int’l certified instructors are equipped with the knowledge and skills to serve a multitude of disabilities, including but not limited to: cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, learning disabilities, spina bifida, emotional disorders, autism spectrum disorder, and intellectual developmental disorders. Additionally, we proudly serve United States Military Veterans, Active-Duty Service Members, and those facing difficult life circumstances.

To fulfill our riders’ needs, we rely on a team of dedicated volunteers. Volunteers play an instrumental role in the provision of services, helping to assist riders by ensuring their safety during the riding lesson. In addition to our certified instructors, as many as three volunteers may be required to assist each rider.

Today, more than 250 individuals participate annually in JHTR’s programs. We receive referrals from Teton County School District, Make a Wish, C-V Ranch, Community Entry Services (an advocacy and service organization for people with disabilities), Honoring our Veterans, and medical professionals throughout the county.

Together, our hardworking horses, dedicated volunteers, and knowledgeable staff create an environment of encouragement and support, assisting our riders in their pursuit of strength, confidence, and independence. This has all been made possible thanks to the tireless efforts of our incredible founders.
